EPHEMEROPTERA (aka Mayflies)

There was a hatch last night - when I walked the dog the air was thick with them. Today there are thousands of dead and dying mayflies everywhere. They live for less than 24 hour as mayflies but have spent a year in the lake getting ready for their big day. Today they fly, they mate, the females lay eggs and they will die. These hatches begin in the spring. Some are much heavier than others this was a very BIG hatch.

Today I sketched outside but it was HOT - I also worked on posemanic site for awhile - now that is challenging.

I enjoy your blog and art works. This sketch is wonderful.

I gave you an award on my blog. Don't feel you have to participate unless you want to :)

What a graceful insect! Love your sketches and the way you journal and pick up subjects.

While taking my morning shower, I looked up and there was an ephemeroptera. I thought of its short life span and tried to remember the name. "Aerohopter" is what I could come up with, which is rather appropriate considering its resemblance to some sort of copter. I spared its life and remembered your art.
